New Hope, New Haven by Patricia Kane, PhD and Nancy Mohr The fall into the labyrinth of mental illness leaves both family and physician often helpless in acquiring biological therapeutic support that has been brought forth by the renowned physicians of our time: Dr. Carl Pfeiffer, Dr. Abram Hoffer, Dr. Carlton Fredericks and Dr. Theron Randolph. Their profound contributions have led us to boldly approach the complexity of bipolar, depressive, and obsessivecompulsive disorders, schizophrenia and the major psychoses. These disorders represent a myriad of symptoms, disabilities, and challenges that require an appropriate setting for healing to take place. Yet residential facilities which orchestrate orthomolecular intervention have not been available for these patients to recover. Dr. Pfeiffer's original working model for biomedical intervention included Earth House which in the 70s and 80s represented a pure home environment and natural food for his adult patients. This model, however, has not yet been recreated on a large scale to support adults with mental illness who choose biological intervention. New Hope is the dream of John and Daphne Stegmaier that a safe haven be available that will embrace a holistic, physiological approach for the treatment of mental illness. When the Stegmaiers' youngest daughter developed mental illness at age fourteen they searched like so many other families for a facility that was supportive to biological intervention. It is their wish that others might avoid the downward spiral of deterioration, the hopelessness and most frustrating of all, the prejudice from the conservative medical community in regard to any treatment other then psychotropic drug therapy being considered, even though drug therapy is at best no more than 36% effective in relieving symptoms. New Hope is a non_profit organization whose mission is to provide individualized evidence based neurobiological treatment for adults with chronic mental illness. New Hope Evaluation/ Comprehensive Testing considerations include: Blood Chemistry 28/CBC and Red Cell Fatty Acids with B dyB medical analysis, Amino Acids, Hormonal Testing, Heavy Metal screen, Ceruloplasmin, serum Copper, Homocysteine, Glycosylated Hemoglobin, Whole Blood Histamine, Urinary sulfite/sulfate, Urinary Pyrroles (mauve factor), Urinary Porphyrins, Niacin Patch Test, Allergy and ChemicalSensitivity Screen/Challenge, EEG/Neurobiofeedback Evaluation, KaplanVisual Perception and Irlen Color Testing, Hoffer Osmond Diagnostic Test (HOD). New Hope Metabolic Intervention will include:
By far the most intriguing of all interventions available today for mental illness is that of lipid therapy. New Hope therapy considerations include CerebralMagnet Pulsed Therapy (Hoff man's approach from Yale University), Visual Therapy (Kaplan, Irlen methods), Neurobiofeedback (Laibow method), cleansing via sauna and whirlpool baths as well as the development of life skills. A biodynamic garden is planned along with other innovative methods to reintroduce participants to the vibrant world around them. New Hope has many valiant supporters. Margot Kidder, who utilized Dr. Hoffer's work in her recovery, said in an interview regarding New Hope, "It is clear that my work, the work I am supposed to be doing with my life, is to pursue better and more comprehensive treatment for the mentally ill." There exists a rich formulary of biomedical interventions within our reach to guide individuals out of chronic mental illness. The science is available but must be fully realized by the creation of a new haven, a New Hope.
